Micrographs : Alumina
Alumina ceramics (AL2O3) are highly stable and inert, making them suitable containers for chemical processes, for example. They are hard and dense and fired at high temperatures (e.g ~ 1650 °C).
This sample contains glass, to reduce porosity and improve strength. However, it loses this strength at high temperatures as the glass softens and melts (above around 700°C).
