This is a ceramic fibre (commonly known by its trade name Nicalon). It has similar properties to alumina fibres such as Nextel, and is used for applications at high temperatures.

Silicon fibres are often used in metal matrix composites, reinforcing metals such as aluminium and titanium to provide high stiffness and low density.
